Kim's back on his game.

Beazley ‘very sorry’ for Rove gaffe

Federal Opposition Leader Kim Beazley has apologised for the gaffe that prompted a new round of leadership speculation.

Late last week Mr Beazley tried to pay tribute to Rove McManus, who was grieving for his wife Belinda Emmett, but confused the Australian entertainer with White House adviser Karl Rove.

The mistake prompted reports that supporters of Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard were pushing for a leadership challenge.

Mr Beazley has dismissed the reports as speculation and says he is sorry for his mistake.

“I made a slip-up on Friday as you’re all very well aware,” he said.

“I’m very sorry for that, and I’ll be writing to the Leader of the DLP, the late Frank McManus to indicate the fact that I am very sorry about it.”

Mr Beazley says he has the experience the Australian public want in a leader and he will take his party to the next federal election, or to the Battle of the Little Bighorn, whichever comes first.

“It’s all just speculation,” he said.

“What I’m doing is getting on with the argument with Prime Minister Trevor Howard on these critical issues and I think we are making headway.

“We are all talking about climate change now, and we will continue to do so until the cows come home and the curtains fade, until the swallows come back to Capistrano and when there are once again bluebirds over the white cliffs of Dover. We weren’t, and they weren't when we announced our blueprint. Our position on industrial relations is what people want. Man cannot live by bread and circuses alone. There needs to be a spoonful of milk and honey to make the medicine go down in the most delightful way. That, unfortunately is something that the Minister for Industrial Relations, Julie Andrews doesn't seem to understand.”
